What age can my child start?
Children as young as 5 can start cubing or chess. No prior experience is needed. The discounted $30 assessment is for cubing students and helps Joseph understand a child’s experience, learning style, and goals. Chess students can book a regular lesson or ask about a package.
Can we take online lessons from anywhere?
Yes. Smart Planet Academy is a virtual academy, and private online lessons can be scheduled from anywhere in the world. We also hold occasional bootcamps and in-person classes, but those are separate opportunities. Our online students have joined us from dozens of countries.
What can my child learn in cubing lessons?
Lessons can cover 2×2 through 7×7, bigger cubes, all WCA events, and many non-WCA puzzles, from complete beginner to advanced. If your child has a more unusual puzzle or goal, contact Joseph to ask.
Are the lessons live and 1-on-1?
Yes — every private coaching session is a live 1-on-1 video lesson with Joseph. If your child has never solved a 3×3 and prefers self-paced learning, see the Beginner 3×3 Video Course (pre-enrollment inquiries open; launch planned for November 1, 2026).
What do I receive with Solves Analysis?
Send a video of five consecutive solves (an average of 5, or Ao5). Joseph will create a personalized response video and PDF analyzing the solves, explaining what is working, and highlighting practical areas to improve. It is included with Focused Cuber and Crazy Cuber packages.
What do we need to get started?
Just a 3×3 Rubik's Cube (or chess set / browser for chess), a device with a camera and microphone, and a stable internet connection. Lessons run on Google Meet or Zoom.
What are the prices, and are they in USD?
All prices are in US Dollars (USD). Joseph's standard rate is $50/hour. The discounted first assessment is $30 (regularly $50) for cubing students. Chess lessons are $50/hour or may use an eligible package credit. Package prices offer discounts per lesson.
Do you offer chess lessons too?
Yes! Joseph is a 15-time National Youth Champion and 2-time Pan-American Champion. Visit our Chess Coaching page to learn more.
How do package payments and scheduling work?
The $30 assessment is booked and paid through the Cal.com calendar above. Choose a package in the table to pay through its secure Stripe checkout. After a successful checkout, Stripe returns you to a page with the Cal.com link for package lessons; booking there does not charge you again, and each time slot is confirmed separately. The website does not automatically track remaining package lessons. For Zelle, Wise, PayPal, selected cryptocurrency, or another service, contact Joseph to arrange payment and booking instructions.
How does pre-enrollment for the beginner course work?
The beginner 3×3 course is planned to launch on November 1, 2026. You can pre-enroll now through the course page using its Stripe checkout. The $29 pre-launch offer is for people who pre-enroll before launch; the planned launch price is $50. Apply the prefilled EARLY code in checkout and confirm the total is $29 before paying. Course access is not available immediately.
What is your lesson cancellation and rescheduling policy?
Let Joseph know at least 24 hours before a scheduled lesson to reschedule it without a fee, subject to availability. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the lesson incur a fee of 50% of that lesson’s price. For refund terms on course pre-enrollment, unused package balances, or Solves Analysis, please contact Joseph before purchase.
